Jai J, a seller of The Big Issue at Glebe Markets, has been training her dog, Bella, for years. Jai has suffered from mental illness for a large portion of her life and thought that having a dog would be beneficial for her overall wellbeing. It wasn’t just the notion of companionship that attracted Jai to this idea; it was the relationship, the responsibility and, of course, the unconditional love that attaches to that relationship. She says, “Animals have an instinct of knowing how we are emotionally; when we connect with our animals we develop our own personal relationship. It’s like when you have a human partner, they know when you are anxious and need a hug.” (The Big Issue, No. 522, 7-20 October 2016, p.17).
